Dry Eye Syndrome: Causes and Relief

If your eyes frequently feel gritty, irritated, or uncomfortable, you might be experiencing dry eye syndrome. Interestingly, one of the most common symptoms is actually watery eyes. This seemingly contradictory response happens because dryness triggers an overproduction of tears as the eye tries to protect itself.

Dry eye occurs when something disrupts the normal production or quality of tears. Our tears aren't just water; they're a complex mixture of oils, water, and mucus that work together to keep the eye surface healthy and comfortable. When any component is out of balance, problems arise.

Many factors can contribute to dry eye. Age is significant; tear production naturally decreases as we get older, and dry eye becomes increasingly common with age. Hormonal changes, particularly in women during menopause, can affect tear production. Certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs, list dry eye among their side effects.

Environmental factors play a role too. Central heating and air conditioning reduce humidity, which increases tear evaporation. Spending long periods looking at screens reduces our blink rate, meaning tears aren't spread across the eye surface as frequently. Even windy conditions outdoors can accelerate tear evaporation.

Some medical conditions are associated with dry eye, including rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and thyroid disorders. If dry eye is severe or persistent, it's worth mentioning to your doctor.

Relief is available in many forms. Lubricating eye drops, available without prescription, can supplement your natural tears. These come in different formulations; some suit occasional use while others are designed for more frequent application. Your optometrist can recommend the most appropriate type for your situation. Simple environmental changes help too: using a humidifier, taking regular screen breaks, and staying well hydrated.

At Atlantic Home Eyecare, checking for dry eye symptoms is part of our standard examination. We can identify whether dry eye is affecting you, discuss likely causes, and recommend appropriate management. If you've been putting up with uncomfortable eyes, there's no need to simply tolerate it.
