Caring for Your Spectacles: Tips for Longer-Lasting Glasses

A good pair of spectacles represents a significant investment, both financially and in terms of your daily comfort and vision. Yet many people inadvertently shorten the lifespan of their glasses through habits that seem harmless but actually cause damage over time. A little care goes a long way.

The most important rule for cleaning your glasses is to avoid dry wiping. When you rub a dry cloth or tissue across your lenses, any tiny particles of dust or grit act like sandpaper, creating fine scratches. Over time, these scratches accumulate and affect the clarity of your vision. Instead, rinse your lenses under lukewarm water first to wash away any debris before wiping.

For proper cleaning, a small drop of washing-up liquid works well. Gently rub it over both sides of each lens, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. Specialist lens cleaning sprays are also excellent and convenient for quick touch-ups when you're out and about. Avoid household glass cleaners, as some contain chemicals that can damage lens coatings.

Where you put your glasses when you're not wearing them matters enormously. Leaving them face-down on surfaces is asking for scratched lenses. A proper case offers the best protection, but if you must set them down without one, rest them on their temples with the lenses facing upward.

Heat is surprisingly damaging to spectacles. The dashboard of a car on a sunny day can reach temperatures that warp plastic frames and damage lens coatings. Never leave glasses in direct sunlight or near radiators. Similarly, avoid wearing them in saunas or very hot showers.

Regular adjustments keep your glasses fitting comfortably and correctly. Frames gradually loosen with wear, and poorly fitting spectacles not only feel uncomfortable but can affect your vision if the lenses aren't positioned properly in front of your eyes. Pop in for adjustments whenever needed; it only takes a moment.
