Eye Conditions That Run in Families

When we talk about family medical history, we often think about heart disease or diabetes. But eye health has a strong hereditary component too. Understanding which conditions run in families helps you know when extra vigilance might be wise.

Glaucoma has a significant genetic link. If you have a close relative, such as a parent or sibling, with glaucoma, your risk of developing it yourself is considerably higher than average. The NHS recognises this increased risk, offering free eye examinations to anyone over 40 with an immediate family member who has glaucoma. Given that glaucoma often develops without symptoms, regular monitoring becomes especially important if it runs in your family.

Age-related macular degeneration also tends to cluster in families. Having a parent or sibling with AMD increases your own risk substantially. If macular degeneration has affected close relatives, maintaining regular eye examinations and considering lifestyle factors that may reduce risk, such as not smoking, eating well, and protecting eyes from UV light, becomes particularly worthwhile.

Some types of cataract have hereditary components, particularly those that develop at younger ages. While age-related cataracts are extremely common regardless of family history, if family members developed cataracts unusually early, your optometrist should know.

Refractive errors like short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism all show hereditary patterns. Children of short-sighted parents are more likely to be short-sighted themselves. While this isn't a disease requiring treatment in the same way as glaucoma, knowing the family history helps predict what children and grandchildren might experience.

Colour vision deficiency, commonly called colour blindness, is inherited, typically passing from mothers to sons through the X chromosome. Knowing about colour vision issues in the family can help with early identification in younger generations.

When you come for an eye examination, we'll ask about your family history of eye conditions. This information helps us understand your individual risk profile and guides how we examine your eyes. Some conditions warrant earlier or more frequent screening in those with family history.

At Atlantic Home Eyecare, we take a thorough approach to understanding each patient's background. If eye conditions run in your family, please do mention it. This knowledge helps us look after your eyes more effectively throughout your life.
