The Importance of Updating Your Glasses Prescription

It's easy to put off getting your eyes tested, particularly if your glasses still seem to be working reasonably well. But prescriptions change over time, often so gradually that you don't notice the deterioration. Keeping your prescription current matters more than many people realise.

An outdated prescription means your eyes are working harder than necessary. While your visual system can compensate to some degree, this compensation requires effort. The result is often eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue, particularly after visually demanding tasks. You might blame tiredness or stress when the real culprit is spectacles that no longer quite meet your needs.

The changes can be subtle. Perhaps you've started sitting slightly closer to the television without consciously deciding to. Maybe reading feels more effortful than it used to, or you've noticed you're not quite as comfortable driving at dusk as you once were. These gradual shifts often go unrecognised until a new prescription reveals just how much clearer the world can be.

For those over 40, presbyopia progresses steadily for a couple of decades. Your reading prescription will almost certainly need updating every year or two during this period. Putting off tests means putting up with unnecessary difficulty with close work.

Outdated prescriptions also raise safety concerns. If you drive, adequate vision is both a legal requirement and essential for safety. Glasses that were fine two years ago might no longer bring your sight up to the standard needed for safe driving.

Beyond the prescription itself, glasses can deteriorate in other ways. Lens coatings may become scratched or damaged, affecting clarity. Frame fit changes over time as components loosen. Even if your prescription hasn't changed, old glasses might not be serving you as well as they should.

NHS guidelines recommend eye examinations at least every two years for most adults, more frequently for those over 70 or with certain conditions. These intervals exist for good reasons.
