Watery Eyes: Why They Happen and What Helps

It might seem paradoxical, but watery eyes are one of the most common complaints we hear about, often from people who also suffer from dry eye symptoms. Understanding why eyes water excessively helps explain this apparent contradiction and points toward solutions.

Tears are produced constantly to keep the eye surface healthy and comfortable. They drain away through tiny channels in the inner corners of the eyelids, flowing into the nose. This is why your nose runs when you cry. When something disrupts this balance, either by increasing tear production or reducing drainage, watery eyes result.

Reflex watering occurs when something irritates the eye. Wind, cold air, bright light, dust, and allergies can all trigger a flood of tears as the eye tries to wash away the irritant or protect itself. This is a normal protective response, though it can certainly be inconvenient.

Paradoxically, dry eye syndrome commonly causes watering. When the normal tear film isn't adequate, the eye surface becomes irritated. This triggers reflex tear production, but these emergency tears are watery and don't have the right composition to solve the underlying dryness. The result is eyes that feel dry and gritty yet water constantly.

Blocked tear drainage is another common cause, particularly in older adults. The drainage channels can narrow or become obstructed, preventing tears from draining away normally. Instead, they overflow onto the cheeks. This often affects one eye more than the other and may be worse in cold or windy conditions.

Eyelid problems can contribute too. If the lower lid doesn't sit snugly against the eye, tears can't reach the drainage channels properly. Conditions like ectropion, where the lid turns outward, commonly cause watering for this reason.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Dry eye responds to lubricating drops and attention to environmental factors. Blocked drainage may need investigation and sometimes minor procedures to open the channels. Eyelid problems might require surgical correction.

At Atlantic Home Eyecare, we can examine your eyes to determine why they're watering and advise on appropriate management. Watery eyes are often very treatable once the cause is understood, so don't simply put up with constantly dabbing your eyes.
