Blepharitis: Understanding Sore, Irritated Eyelids

Sore, red, crusty eyelids are surprisingly common, yet many people put up with the discomfort without realising there's a name for it and plenty they can do to help. Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids, and while it's rarely serious, it can be persistently uncomfortable if left unmanaged.

The condition typically affects the edges of the eyelids where the eyelashes grow. You might notice redness, swelling, and a gritty or burning sensation. Eyelids can feel itchy and may look greasy or crusty, particularly first thing in the morning. Some people find their eyelashes become matted together overnight, while others notice small flakes similar to dandruff around the lash line.

Several factors contribute to blepharitis. Bacteria that naturally live on our skin can overgrow around the eyelid margins. Blocked oil glands in the eyelids, which normally produce oils that help keep tears stable, can become clogged and inflamed. Skin conditions like rosacea and seborrhoeic dermatitis are associated with blepharitis. It tends to be a chronic condition that flares up from time to time rather than something that's cured once and forgotten.

The cornerstone of managing blepharitis is regular eyelid hygiene. A daily routine of warming, massaging, and cleaning the eyelids can make a significant difference. Start by holding a warm, damp flannel against your closed eyelids for several minutes. This helps soften any crusts and melts oils blocking the glands. Then gently massage the eyelids towards the lash line to help express any blocked material. Finally, clean along the lash line using a dedicated lid cleaning product on a wipe or cotton pad.

This routine works best when done consistently, even when symptoms improve. Many people find their symptoms return if they stop the lid hygiene regime.

In more stubborn cases, your optometrist or GP might recommend antibiotic ointments or drops. Sometimes oral antibiotics or anti-inflammatory treatments are needed for severe or persistent blepharitis.
