Protecting Your Eyes from UV Damage

As the days grow longer and we spend more time outdoors, thoughts often turn to protecting our skin from the sun. But what about our eyes? Ultraviolet radiation can cause real damage to eye health, yet many people overlook eye protection entirely.

UV exposure contributes to several eye conditions. Cataracts, the clouding of the eye's lens, develop more quickly with cumulative UV exposure over a lifetime. Macular degeneration, which affects central vision, has also been linked to sun damage. Even the surface of the eye can suffer, with growths called pterygia and pingueculae developing from chronic UV exposure.

Unlike sunburn on skin, which makes itself known quickly and painfully, UV damage to the eyes accumulates silently over years. The effects of today's sun exposure might not become apparent for decades, which is precisely why developing good protective habits matters.

Quality sunglasses are your first line of defence. Look for lenses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Price isn't necessarily an indicator of protection; inexpensive sunglasses can offer excellent UV blocking if properly manufactured. Check for labels or tags confirming UV protection, and be wary of fashion sunglasses without clear specifications.

Lens colour doesn't indicate UV protection. Dark lenses without proper UV blocking are actually worse than no sunglasses at all because they cause your pupils to dilate, allowing more harmful rays to enter. Polarised lenses reduce glare beautifully but don't inherently offer better UV protection, so still check for that UV rating.

Wraparound styles offer better protection by blocking light from the sides. This is particularly worthwhile for extended outdoor activities or if you're near reflective surfaces like water or sand, which can bounce UV rays toward your eyes from unexpected angles.

Hats with brims provide additional protection, reducing the amount of UV reaching your eyes from above. Combined with good sunglasses, you'll have comprehensive coverage.

Even on cloudy days, significant UV radiation reaches the ground. Don't reserve your sunglasses only for bright sunshine.

At Atlantic Home Eyecare, we can help you choose prescription sunglasses that offer both clear vision and proper protection. If you spend time outdoors and your eyes are important to you, considering dedicated prescription sunwear is well worthwhile.
